…

Staggering Illiteracy Rates in Haiti:

Frighteningly low literacy rates continue to be one of the biggest obstacles in Haiti’s struggle against poverty and stagnation. While Haiti’s Constitution guarantees free public education for all citizens, the government has been unable to fulfill this obligation. In fact, the average Haitian attends fewer than five years of school total, and only 20% of the population attends school after the 6th grade. As a result, many children never learn to read and write, and Haiti’s literacy rate hovers at only 55%, as compared to 99% in the United States and 90% for other Caribbean nations. (sources: World Bank and Library of Congress literacy statistics)

Renegade Storytelling Project:

In response to these illiteracy rates, Project HOPE Art created an Art & Literacy project to promote interest in stories using some of the world’s most beloved children’s books as our tool.

Our Renegade Storytelling Project kicked off in April of 2012 at the OJFA orphanage and the Centre d’Education et de Formattion des Jeunes in Port-Au-Prince, featuring Maurice Sendak’s classic Where The Wild Things Are.

We used a combination of story hours, art projects, and giant story posters to tell the tales and capture imaginations.

Art trading cards are little works of art that measure 2.5” x 3.5” in size. In July 2013, Project HOPE Art will once again be traveling to Haiti, and would love to deliver as many of these cards as possible to children who have so much less than the rest of the world.

If you would like to take part in this drive, and send a message of good will, please follow the project requests below.

Use any type paper that you like, but it must measure 2.5” x 3.5”.

Create art on the front of the card that describes what your life islike. For example, I live in an apartment in CA, so I drew buildingswith a palm tree out front. Add your city and state (or country) below.

Add a message on the back and sign it with a first name only.

Placing each card in a plastic penny sleeve would be great, but not necessary.

Mail the cards to: Kathy Barbro, 12840 Moorpark Street #307, Studio City, CA by July 1st, 2013.

Please note that traveling to Haiti with extra luggage can get quite expensive, so donations would be very much appreciated. Visit http://www.fracturedatlas.org and search for HOPE Art to make a tax deductible donation. For further information, email kathy@projecthopeart.org. Thank you everyone for your support!

They took some of Melissa’s photos of Haiti children and created these works of recycled art with materials found around their home in Port-Au-Prince.
We are always looking for ways to create fun, whimsy and art from unwanted discarded materials. So when Delphine Bedu spied these cans on a pier in Key West, Florida all of us sat up and took notice.

As we speak, our home team artists at the Project HOPE Art Center at HC, Racine Polycarpe, Claudel Casseus and Romel Jean Pierre are devising a class around upcycling cans into planes, boats and cars. On the last Sunday in April 2013, 10 children from local orphanages will be on site at our art center creating their dream vehicle in a class led by Racine and Claudel.

They will compete in a Can Race and we will be awarding tools and art supplies to the winner of the race.

The race will be captured as the first assignment by the students in our new photography class. Stay tuned for the results. We will be sure to post instructions and best practices in early summer so you may host your own Can Race.

If you’d like to get involved, we are ALWAYS accepting donations to stay afloat. In fact we need to raise $1,000 to make this Can Race happen.
Long story short — that exchange changed my life. I soon met the amazing women of Project Hope Art, joined their cause, and have had so many incredible adventures with them ever since. I’ve drawn, painted, colored, crafted, danced, laughed (and cried!) with them and some of the most adorable little Haitian souls you could ever meet.

So why am I sharing this with you now? Because our merry band of volunteers is starting to make some really big things happen and we need some help. We have a new art center in Port Au Prince, sponsorship plans for three young Haitian artists, and a new photography program, just to get started. We particularly need a new volunteer with financial experience, art education experience, and another that can help us keep organized. If you have any of these skills, and are even a little bit curious about what it might be like to be part of a positive change in the world, please send us a message. This is a virtual job, you can live anywhere, we just need your energy and passion for helping children who deserve so much more than what they have right now.

Meet our newest partner, Burners Without Borders. Every summer Burning Man participants (aka Burners) meet in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada to re-engage with their community, and to celebrate shared values of radical self-expression and self-reliance. They join together to celebrate the power of community, honor the importance of art, and enjoy the immediacy of experience.

But that experience and those values don’t get left behind in the desert. They simply inform who they are, and how they interact with the larger world. Burners Without Borders (BWB) is a manifestation of what can happen when those values are transported off the playa and out into the rest of the world.

Since 2005 and Hurricane Katrina, BWB has been responding to disasters world-wide and following up by implementing inspiring programs on the ground in these post-disaster locations. We are working together with BWB to further promote our Visiting Artist Program and also to garner more interest in their Artist Residency Program in Haiti.

Here’s a post about Project HOPE Art on the BWB website.

Pirate Contemporary art is proud to present— I am Kid.
I am Kid, is a group exhibition featuring work by Holly Johnson who is a founding member of the Denver collective PINK COLLAR GLAM and students from her 1st through 3rd Grade art class at Aspen Academy.
I am Kid, features work that is based on the idea of pure art, almost that which is in the milieu of outsider art. The paintings and drawings are collaborative pieces created by 1st-3rd grade pupils. The paintings reside in a foreseen reference to Abstract Expressionism, yet the work is in a category all its own. The show celebrates the creativity, honesty, and innocence of a child. Holly Johnson will also feature work that references the idea of making art out of the desperate and innate need to produce something meaningful and to offer of oneself true expression.
Invited Guests:
Thomas Pelz, Avery Starishevsky, Ian Welker, Casson Brown, Gracie Richardson, Sean Speil, Audry Wong, and a few others to be determined
Other Info:
All proceeds will be donated to the Aspen Academy art program and Project Hope Art in Haiti.
Aspen Academy is a private school in Greenwood Village, CO. Holly Johnson is the 1st-8th grade art teacher there. The school is heavily grounded on the principles of leadership and whose only rule is to “be kind”
Project Hope is a non-profit organization in Haiti that believes “art is a universal language.”
